Islamic University of Science & Technology Official logo of Islamic University of Science & Technology - Jammu & Kashmir
Established in Year: 2005

The guiding philosophy of the Islamic University of Science and Technology is to be a garden for dialogue. The University strives to create an environment of learning where students can develop, cultivate and support an academic culture that values interdisciplinary learning and inculcates social awareness at multiple levels, from local to regional and global

History and Governance

The Islamic University of Science and Technology was established by an Act of the Jammu and Kashmir State Legislative Assembly in November 2005. The Chancellor of the University is the Chief Minister, ex officio of the State, and its Board is the Board of Directors, ex officio, of the J&K Muslim Wakf Board. The apex executive authority of the University is its Executive Council, chaired by the Vice Chancellor. Its flat administrative structure comprises of four key executive departments consisting of the Office of the Vice Chancellor, the Office of the Finance Officer, the Office of the Registrar, the Office of the Dean of Academic Affairs and the Department of Estates. These units report directly to the Vice Chancellor.

Accreditations

The Islamic University of Science and Technology is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and its specified courses are approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). It is a member of the Association of Indian Universities. During the academic year 2009–10, the University anticipates an enrollment of around 1,400 students. Currently, most students are from the Kashmir Valley, Jammu and Ladakh, but we expect to have a more varied student demographic in the coming years.

Community Initiatives

Social responsibility is an integral part of the culture and ethos of our University. We interact closely with the local Rotary Club and other organisations that have a social agenda. We regularly host events such as farmers’ awareness camps, health awareness programmes and community workshops to inculcate a sense of civic consciousness and duty amongst students.

Locations

The Islamic University of Science & Technology is located in the medieval town of Awantipora in South Kashmir, a 35-minute drive from Dalgate in Srinagar. Spread across 25 acres, just south of the famed saffron fields of Pampore, the picturesque campus has the Himalayan mountain range on one side and the Jhelum river on the other. The spectacular geography of the area is also the cultural crucible that has cradled three major religions – Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam. The University recognizes its responsibility to further this legacy by nurturing a spirit of dialogue and understanding within its community of learners.

Future Architectural Plan

The Governing Board of the University was given an initial presentation of the architectural plans in April 2007. It is estimated that the implementation of this plan will take three to five years to complete at a total project cost of Rs. 150 -200 crores. The University is currently in the process of sourcing funds to begin construction and has appointed a core fund-raising committee to initiate this effort. The plan will be implemented in a phased manner, so that construction activity does not interfere with the normal day-to-day functioning of the University. The completed project will include a state-of-the-art library, a multi-functional auditorium for 600 students, a mosque, hostels, housing units for faculty and administrative staff, a printing press, canteen, gymnasium and an amphitheatre, apart from all the usual facilities such as classrooms, lecture halls and a sports complex. The University will also have a medical centre and a health club. The architectural plan conforms to the University’s vision to create a garden of dialogue on campus. Students and teachers from different disciplines are given spaces to interact, constantly exchange ideas and make the University a dynamic place for inquiry and learning.

Vision and Objectives

The guiding philosophy of the Islamic University of Science and Technology is to be a garden for dialogue. The University strives to create an environment of learning where students can develop, cultivate and support an academic culture that values interdisciplinary learning and inculcates social awareness at multiple levels, from local to regional and global.

The Islamic University of Science and Technology offers opportunities for higher learning to the people of Jammu and Kashmir and neighbouring regions. We aim to: give our students an appreciation of the wonder and beauty that exists in the diverse and plural world we live in. seek knowledge in the pursuit of a ‘complete education’, with a clear focus on job markets and career-orientation. In keeping with our vision for interdisciplinary learning, the Islamic University’s strong Science and Technology orientation is complemented by the diverse and innovative introduction of Humanities and Social Sciences into the curriculum. Every student enrolled in a degree program is required to take up to 20% of courses in the Humanities in order to be awarded a degree. We firmly believe that significant awareness of the Humanities will help graduates to better understand social trends and human aspirations within the work place. It will also encourage them to appreciate diversity amongst people and contribute towards positive change. To drive these objectives, the Islamic University has instituted three Centres dedicated to the Humanities and Social Sciences. They include:

CENTRE FOR INTERNATIONAL PEACE AND CONFLICT STUDIES
IBN KHALDUN CENTRE FOR COMPARATIVE CIVILIZATIONS
RINCHEN SHAH CENTRE FOR WEST HIMALAYAN CULTURES

These Centres are mandated to impart a core curriculum in the Humanities to all full-time students, to offer degree programmes and to promote advanced research for scholars. By integrating Humanities into our core purpose, we aim to provide a well balanced academic environment for both students (who are seeking a career) and scholars (who are looking to further their understanding of people and the world). Our focus on career development and overall personality enhancement is a concrete step towards providing a more complete education for leadership.
