The Maharashtra Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri is established on March 29, 1968 and subsequently named as Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth (MPKV) after a great social reformer "Mahatma Jyotiba Phule". It has started functioning from October, 1969 at Rahuri, District Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, India. The Campus is situated 160 km from Pune on Pune-Delhi highway in Ahmednagar district. Forty kilometer in the South is Ahmednagar town and 50 km in the North is Shirdi, famous for the saint Saibaba. Newasa, land of saint Dnyaneshwar is 33 km from Rahuri. The campus is 10 km from Rahuri Railway Station and 110 km from Manmad railway junction. Ahmednagar is a historical place and was a capital of the Nizam rulers. It is famous for co-operative sugar and dairy industries. The annual average maximum and minimum temperature ranges between 30 to 40 0C and 10 to 20 0C. respectively.

The basic mandate assigned to this University are advancement in teaching, research and imparting extension education to the farmers of the State. There are four Agricultural Universities in the State , catering the similar services in their locality. The jurisdiction of Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri extends over Western Maharashtra covering ten districts.

The University has two faculties namely Agriculture and Agricultural Engineering. The under-graduate and post-graduate programmes are offered in both faculties. The University also deals with lower agricultural education through Agricultural Schools, Mali Training Centre and Training's for Livestock Supervisors.

The University has a very good network of research stations spread over different agro-climatic zones. In all 23 research stations, 4 State level specialists and 16 research testing/verification centers are located in different agro-climatic zones in addition to 4 Zonal research stations.

Of the three fold functions, it is mandatory on the part of the University to transfer the technology from the research centers to the ultimate users through extension education programme.

Organization Setup

The Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri is a statutary body of the Governemnt of Maharashtra. It is headed by the Vice-Chancellor who is appointed by the Hon.Chancellor of the State. The minister for Agriculture is a pro chancellor of the University. The Maharashtra Council Agricultural Education and Research (MCAER) is established to co-ordinate the smooth functioning of four agricultural universities in the State. The council has its head quarter at Pune. It consist of eminent scientists, administrator and legislators. The Executive committee appointed by the State is a apex governing body and the main decision making authority of the University which is headed by the Vice Chancellor. It consists of eminent agricultural scientists, educators, legislators and representatives of farmers. It is assisted by the Academic Council, faculty council meeting, Board of Studies of respective disciplines, Agricultural Research Council and Extension Education Council.

The Vice-Chancellor is assisted by the Director of Instructions and Dean, Director of Research, Director of Extension Education and Dean faculty of Agricultural Engineering. At each under grduate and post graduate college there is a position of Associate Dean who looks after the working of college under him. The Associate Dean (Lower Agricultural Education) looks after the working of Agricultural Schools and Training Centers.

The Registrar for academic and administrative matters, the Comptroller for accounts and finance matters and the University Engineer for works are the other supporting authorities of the University.

Formation of the Agricultural Universities

  • Till the Agricultural Universities were established the agricultural education and research were managed by the respective State Department of Agriculture and Colleges were affiliated to the traditional Universities as one of the faculties. Looking to the complexities of the agricultural problems and in depth education and research, the concept of farm universities was conceived. With the recommendations of Radhakrishnan Commission (1948) the agricultural universities were established in this country from 1960.
  • The First University was established at Pantnagar in Uttar Pradesh. This was followed by establishment of agricultural universities in different States. In pursuance of the Maharashtra Agricultural University (Krishi Vidyapeeth) Act, 1967, initially, the Maharashtra Agricultural University (Krishi Vidyapeeth) was established for the entire Maharashtra State and started functioning from 29th March, 1968 with its office at Bombay. The office was shifted in the year 1969 to College of Agriculture, Pune.
  • In the year 1969 two, and later on 1972 four agricultural universities were established. Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri is one of them established in 1969 for the Western Maharashtra having jurisdiction spread over nine districts namely, Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur, Ahmednagar, Solapur, Pune, Nashik, Dhule and Jalgaon. The University is named after a great social reformer Mahatma Jyotiba Phule.
  • As per the amendments of the acts f 1983, the executive council of the University is the highest body. The Academic Council takes the decision in the academic matter and is supported by Faculty and Board of Studies in different subjects. With the formation of the four Agricultural Universities in the State and with a view to having proper coordination in working and to avoid duplication work, the Maharashtra Council of Agricultural Education and Research was established at Pune.
  • Till the formation of Agricultural Universities different sections at the Colleges of Agriculture, Pune worked as technical department with the professors In-charge being a state level specialist. With the formation of the agricultural universities the entire administrative set up was changed. The teaching, research and extension education in the entire jurisdiction of the university were created. Initially only agricultural faculty started functioning with the Dean, as the Head of Faculty with administrative and technical control. The Faculty of Agricultural Engineering was established in 1969 followed by Faculty of Veterinary Sciences in 1988.
  • The Vice-Chancellor is the Chief Executive Officer for day to day working in the university set up. The Governor f Maharashtra s the Chancellor and Minister for Agriculture of Maharashtra State is the Pro-Chancellor of the University. The education, research and extension education are the principal functions of the agricultural universities.
  • Inorder to coordinate these functions at the university level the Vice-Chancellor is assisted by the Director of Instructions, Director of Research and Director of Extension Education. With the implementation of the National Agricultural Research Project, research was reorganized n zonal basis with Associate Director of Research as In-charge of the zone, directly responsible to the Director of Research
